My older cat and new kitten are fighting. Is it dominance or play?

I let my older 11 month cat in to see my new 6 month old kitten and it was good at first, nose touching, a bit of a sniff no hissing at all. Then my older cat started to "Bop" him on his head, and place his paw on his body. The younger kitten didn't like this, and started hissing and growling. Then, the older kitten pounced and they started to fight. I dont know whether this is expected, or they're play fighting, or just finding their ranks. Please help.

Cats do establish a pecking order and this is likely what is happening. Do not allow them to fight as this could result in wounds and infection. Allow them some contact daily but never unsupervised. Try to play with the kittens during the introduction so that they are focusing on play and getting their energy out as well. Until hey get along, keep the feeding and litter box areas separated.     This sounds like normal playing/roughhousing behavior with cats. Supervise them when they play, but let them sort out their differences as much as possible without intervening. Make sure they both have plenty of places to perch, climb, scratch and hide and take time to play with them individually and together so they don't use all their energy in beating on each other. As long as neither of them is hurting the other, I would just keep an eye on them while they get to know each other for a little while.
