My rat is losing weight and has breathing issues. What should I do?

Updated On December 4th, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Rat | Female

I noticed that dambo lost weight around 55g and now she weights 417g, I am concerned. Her breathing also slightly looks rough but its quiet, her nose has mucus almost daily. She eats and drinks but not as often anymore. Her coat is also very slightly puffy and has narrow which is a sign of sickness. She is active though. I provided some vitamin C and upset tummy vitamins to improve her digestion system, but I would like to hear what you have in mind to share.

Thanks for reaching out about Dambo and including a photo. In the picture, the eyes are squinty, ears dropped and appears to having difficulty. A respiratory infection such as mycoplasmosis, is possible. A veterinary visit is highly recommended as she appears to be very ill and in needed of systemic antibiotics. More is needed than vitamin supplementation. Good luck.
