Why is my female dog licking her private area and has red spots?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Staffordshire Bull Terrier | Female | spayed | 10 lbs

My snookie NEVER licks her crotch. Thisbpast she has been licking it often. Usually after coming in from outside (we just got snow this week). Now her crotch is getting red spots and one looks raised.

Poor pup!!! Increased licking can be a sign of a urinary tract infection or it could be in response to the red areas around her vulva. Dogs can get both bacterial and yeast infections around the vulva. I recommend to have Elly seen by her veterinarian who will likely recommend to check a urine sample. The doctor will also address her the skin lesions with medication. In the mean time, try to prevent Elly from licking by having her wear an Elizabethan collar. You can also wash the exterior area but make sure not to get the soap inside her vulva as that could burn. It’s best to be safe and get her checked. I hope this is helpful and please feel free to post any additional questions.
