Why is my Shih Tzu missing hair with a red spot on his upper lip?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Male | unneutered | 2 years and 7 months old | 15 lbs

My shih tzu has reddish/hot pink, missing hair on half of his upper lip/right above lip. There are just a few small hairs sticking out, the other side is fine, when I touch it he doesn't react and he hasn't SEEMED to be doing anything abnormal. He licks himself and me normally. But I am concerned as it is very noticeable, again half right above or at his lip about dime sized

Lesions like this could be due to an injury, skin infection or the beginning of allergies. Protect the area from any rubbing by having Basil wear an elizabethan collar at all times. You can use a pet wipe and gently cleanse the area once a day. The problem with this area is that topical treatments are generally ineffective since pets just lick off whatever you put on it. This lesion may heal on it's own. If it does not start improving after a few days or if it starts getting worse at any point, have Basil examined by the veterinarian. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.
