My senior dog pees often, licks. Bladder stones again? Can meds help?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | spayed | 11 years and 11 months old | 18 lbs

My shih tzu Lhasa apso mix had severe bladder stones around 6 years ago that required emergency surgery to remove. Now she is around 15 years old. She is starting to urinate in places she shouldn’t and more frequently, and afterwards she licks herself or her urine. Are these symptoms that she is having bladder issues again? And can bladder stones be treated with medicine as opposed to surgery?

Poor Lilly. This can be a sign she is having trouble with bladder stones again. I cannot say this applies in her case, but sometimes bladder stones can be treated with diet. I'd have her seen by a vet to diagnose what is going on so she can get treated. Best of luck.
