Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed
Hello, my cat has a small wound in her side. She is licking it a lot and will let us touch it, but it’s looking quite weepy and I’m just wondering if it needs stitches. It’s not bleeding, just weeping a very light pink, almost clear liquid. She meowed if we touched it a couple of days ago, but now she doesn’t seem to be in pain. She moving around normally and eating and drinking.

This presentation could be due to a trauma or localized spot of skin infection (likely to be caused by bacteria). It may heal on its own, even though it will take few days. Disinfection may be done at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths twice daily. Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid any licking. If the wound will not heal/or at least improve in 5 days, a check up, appropriate disinfection and possibly antibiotics (oral, topical or in a shampoo formulation) are needed to solve the problem. I am sorry to hear that TJ has this going on. I am worried that the wound is infected. Stitches often break down if there is an infection. I would highly encourage you to have a follow up appointment with your veterinarian as soon as possible. In the meantime you can use a warm water and Epsom salts compress to keep the area clean. The wound may need to be cultured and debrided now and perhaps left open to heal. Best of luck and I hope he improves soon. Thank you for using Pet Coach.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! While he may not need more stitches, he does need further evaluation of the incision as there is likely an infection. More stitches may be needed based on a closer examination. I do recommend you have him evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. At the very least, antibiotics are likely going to be prescribed. I highly recommend you use an e-collar to prevent him from getting to his incision. You may find that at your local pet store or online. Good luck and have a great day!
