What to do if my cat vomits hairballs, mucus, and acts unwell?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Maine Coon | Male | neutered | 3 years and 2 months old

Helli Romeo has been puking up a lot of hairballs lately. Then within the last few days he has been puking up what looks like mucus but no hairball, he has been kinda moping around like he is not feeling well also.

I recommend brushing him daily, giving cat lax weekly to prevent hairballs, and you may want to switch to a hairball prevention diet. Sometimes the hair balls aren’t in the right place in the stomach to come out when they vomit. He may continue to vomit until he gets it out. If he stops eating or becomes more lethargic then please bring him in to make sure it’s nothing more serious. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to help you care for Romeo.
