My sick small pet is breathing mouth open. Did I drown her feeding?

Updated On December 4th, 2025

Pet's info: Other | Unknown - Other | Female | unspayed

She has been very ill the last few days today we are going to try to get her into the vet she has been showing signs of a stroke and I know you can't do much more than keep them comfortable When I syringe feed her I am very careful and only do a single drip of baby food or water at a time But today she opens her mouth to breath and I'm worried I may have drowned her even though I was being extra careful just putting baby food on her teeth and waiting on her to swallow (the bedding is not wood)

I am so sorry to hear about Cashew. Even looking at her photo I can tell she is very ill. It is possible the difficulty breathing is unrelated to you giving her food and water. I would be concerned about cancer unfortunately if she is older. This can affect the lungs. Bacterial infection is another possibility. The vet may be able to give her antibiotics if they feel an infection is present, or fluids under her skin to help rehydration. Unfortunately these guys are so tiny it can be very tough to treat them and in some cases if illness is severe then euthanasia is the kindest option.
