My cat's spay incision is hard and red after 5 days. Is it normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed

Patches is about a year old. She was trapped, spayed and released back to her spot in the bush immediately after the op. We took her in and it's been 5 days. Her cut was looking good but now I am not so sure anymore. It is hard and slightly red. Should I be worried?

Nope that looks great! That's a normal reaction to the suture material and will go away over time. I definitely see why that could have you concerned, but luckily it's totally fine. I would be concerned if there was discharge, areas where the skin edges were open, or extreme redness/bruising. That swelling should go away over the next few days to weeks.
