My senior dog has a big belly and is gasping for air. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | spayed | 10 lbs

My vet said Cookie had an infection in her urtus because she is around 11 yrs old and had not been spayed. So a different vet at the same location did the spay and said there was nothing there. Her belly got big within the last month. And she pants alot and sometimes like she's gasping for air.

I would take Cookie back into the vet immediately. Heart disease can be common in senior dogs, and it does cause breathing problems. It can also lead to fluid build up in the abdomen, which could explain the big belly. She should be seen by a vet for these issues.
