Why is my dog chewing his front paws and has red, bumpy, itchy skin?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Pit Bull Terrier | Male | unneutered | 4 years and 7 months old | 100 lbs

Marshall was diagnosed with epilepsy a year ago. A week ago he started chewing on his 2 front paws and won't stop and under his mouth its red and bumpy and itchy. Last night I noticed he was having problems jumping up on the bed.

The three problems are likely to be unrelated. The itchy-bumpy skin is likely to be due to an allergy with a secondary infection. I would strongly recommend to have him checked as your vet can give you appropriate solution to disinfect the skin first, some antibiotics (ointment) to resolve possible infection, and perform some skin testing for both identify the type of infection and confirm allergy.
