Why is my dog's ear swollen with fluid after an ear infection?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Beagle | Female | unspayed | 9 years old | 25 lbs

My dos is a beagle. She is suffering an inflammation on her left ear's pinna or ear flap. This inflammation looks like if she has water inside or retainning liquid, like an small ball of water. She have had an otitis during last 2 weeks. Is it this related to her otitis and what medicine do I have to give her to reduce this inflamation? For the otitis I have used zymox and washing her ear every day.

Thank you for contacting Pet Coach with your question about Wendy! It could be that she has an aural hematoma, which is when blood and fliud build up between the layers of the pinna. This is typically a sequel to an ear infection. The ear infection irritates the dog, leading to it scratching it and shaking it’s head, thus causing the hematoma. There are several approaches to treating it, including draining it and injecting steroids into it, but that needs to be done by the vet. I’d make Wendy an appointment with her vet to have to treated in the next few days. Best of luck, I hope this helps!
