So we cut some of his fur on his bottom where it is matted, and then we were brushing it and he started bleeding.

It sounds like Retro has an infection. Clean the area daily with an antibacterial soap (make sure to rinse it well). I would recommend to take him to the vet for antibiotics and medications to heal the wound. This should heal the lesion within 7 - 14 days. I hope this helps!
