My cat never meows and is very quiet. Is this normal behavior?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Female | spayed | 8 months and 6 days old | 5.5 lbs

Uli has never meowed. At most she will occasionally squeak or emit a small cry. Most of the time she is mute. Is this normal? She was raised in a shelter from age 17 days to 3.5 months

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your question. Not all cats will vocalize and some can be very quiet. This does not indicate she is dealing with an illness. As long as her energy level is normal, is eating / drinking normal amounts and urinating / defecating ok I would not be concerned. If there are any other changes that indicate she is sick (inappetance, vomiting, diarrhea, sneezing, coughing, etc.) I would recommend having a veterinarian examine her so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. I hope this helps! Please let me know if you have any additional questions or concerns and I would be more than happy to help you further!
