My dog's salivary gland mucocele was soft, now it's hard. Why?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Female | spayed | 4 years and 3 months old | 6 lbs

Lupita has a salivary gland mucocele and I took her to the vet and they performed an aspiration to confirm and put her on antibiotics for two weeks after draining . The two weeks are up on Wednesday and she has her appointment this Wednesday to determine if surgery is necessary. However the mucocele is now hard when it was soft at first. Why is it hard now?

Hello, sorry to hear about Lupita. These swellings can become firm and turn into stones which will need to be removed. Your veterinarian will likely recommend this procedure at her next appointment. In the interim, monitor her appetite and make sure she is still able to eat. Hope this helps and best of luck.
