My dog has a white growth on his tongue. Is it serious or benign?

Hello, My apparently healthy 5-year-old sheepdog, Rusty, has developed what appears to be a white growth over most of his tongue. He does not seem to be in pain and behaves normally. Have you any idea what this could be please? Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 5 years and 1 month old | 65 lbs

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This could be a benign or malignant growth. This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. I am really hoping for something benign.
