My cat hacks a lot but can't pass hairballs. What can I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Mediumhair | Male | neutered | 2 years and 8 months old

I have a cat named Lanny that is two years old. Ever since he was a baby he has always “hacked” trying to get up Hair balls. Lately he is getting worse. He is hacking a lot more but never seems to be able to get up the Hair balls. What would you recommend to help my poor boy get the hair balls up? We have been brushing him and putting oil on his paws. Is there anything else we can do? Thank you.

They make a product called cat lax or laxatone that does help them pass hairballs. You can also change his food to a hair ball formula. Some cats can develop asthma and it starts with a cough. I would have your vet check him to be sure this is not a contributing factor
