Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 49 lbs
My dog has had what we thought were allergies so he's been scratching a lot and nibbling on belly and the base of his tail. Been giving him benadryl then we found a flea on him. We then treated him for fleas with Advantix II. I put it in about 6 different spots along his back and near the base of his tail. its been 20 hours and he is still itchy. He wants to nibble on his butt still and I'm worried he will get Advantix in his mouth. Should i worry about this? Why is he still itchy?

Oh poor Jave! Thanks for letting us help you today! The first thing you should know is that you are not alone. It really comes down to figuring out what is causing his allergies so that they can be treated or the specific allergen avoided. There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies. Most of the time it is going to take longer to see a response. Also, you have to supplement flea preventatives with vaccuming all the surfaces he has contact with and the house frequently and give this plan at least 1-3 months. The other extremely important aspect of it is treating a secondary infection if present as that can exacerbate the itchiness and the lesions. If no improvement then it would be a good idea to change to something else (there are many new products out in the market). If not improved in 1-3 months then it is time to move on and check for food allergies by switching to a novel diet (new protein and new carbohydrate). If that does not seem to be the issue then you are left out having to check for environmental allergies which require blood and/or skin tests. Try to avoid direct ingestion of it as that can cause gastrointestinal signs like vomiting and diarrhea. It usually will completely dry-up within 24-48 hours. Allergies can be very frustrating to deal with at first but so rewarding at the end when we are able to treat them effectively!
