My dogs scratch and lick paws in summer. What helps with allergies?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Maltese | Male | neutered | 1 year and 9 months old | 22 lbs

What can I give my two dogs to stop them from scratching themselves and licking their paws in the summertime. They wear flea & tick collars all year round so I think they have allergies to grass or pollen.

There are many prescription medications which are very effective in controlling the itch related to allergic skin disease - your vet will need to confirm the working diagnosis and rule out additional factors such as mites, secondary infections and yeast overgrowth which will also need to be treated if present. A skin specific diet such as royal canin skin support and an omega fatty acid supplement such as dermoscent or viacutan can also help to improve the skin barrier and reduce the impact of environmental allergens
