Why is my cat's litter box urine so pungent? Is it a health issue?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 4 years and 3 months old | 13 lbs

I have two cats. A boy and a girl. When I change the litter box, the urine in the box is very pungent. What could this be from? I just want to make sure my babies will be ok.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding your cats. I would start by changing the litter and scrubbing out the box to see if that helps with the odor. Also observe the cats for signs of a urinary problem. Things to watch for are an increased frequency of urination, blood in the urine, changes in attitude or appetite or straining to urinate. If you notice any of these signs, I would recommend having a urine sample tested. I hope this information helps!
