How to keep a pet mom and her newborn babies warm and calm?

Updated On December 4th, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Unknown - Small Animal | Female | unspayed

What should be the normal room temperature for her and her newborn babies? Also , I was wondering what things should I avoid in order to not stress her out too much? Is keeping the environment calm and quiet enough? Is intervening ONLY to fill the water and food in her cage (two or three times a day) okay? I mean , I could just go on providing the food and water (two or three times a day) as I have been doing or are there some extra precautions that I need to take?

Hi, these are great questions and you’re right to want to minimize stress and intervention. As long as Ellie is eating well and not showing any signs of bleeding or illness, and the babies appear well cared for, then you shouldn’t need to intervene much. True room should be around 68-72F (what we would consider comfortable room temperature). Ellie should have a good amount of clean bedding like Carefresh and you can offer a small cardboard box as a hide that may provide her a sense of security with her babies. Change the water and food daily but try not to speak or make much noise as you go about this. Once true babies are more independent, consider a larger enclosure and separating by gender to prevent any more markings. A veterinarian should examine Ellie and her babies once they are out of this critical post-partum period. If you’d like to discuss this further, feel free to request a consult. Good luck to Ellie and her babies!
