My cat had a seizure, what should I do if I can't afford the vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My cat has had a seizure. It lasted about two minutes, he just fell from where he was laying and started convulsing and twitching on his side, thick drool and foam forming at his mouth. This has never happened to him before, he is about 5. I want to take him to the vets immediately but the only out of hours service in my area is several miles away and has a consultation of £149, which I simply cannot afford. I hope you’ll be able to advise me on what to do. I have liked your page on Facebook.

If your cat has fully recevered from the seizure (which usually takes 5-20 minutes after a seizure), you can monitor him closely at home. Ideally, in a room with no sharp light or sharp noises. Then, you should take him to your local vet tomorrow for a full clinical examination and possibly a blood test. If your cat has not recovered from the fit (so if 30 min after the seizure he is still not acting as normal) OR he has more seizures tonight it is very important to get to your emergency vets asap. You can contact RSPCA and see if they would contribute to the costs of treatment (sometimes they do help).
