My indoor dog nips and scratches. Am I at risk for rabies?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Golden Retriever | Male | unneutered | 3 months and 4 days old | 6 lbs

Austin is inside the house since 45 days. He hasn’t encountered any rabid animal or something like that. He isn’t showing any signs And is healthy. He keeps nipping and scratching me and tears my skin sometimes. Do i have a chance of getting rabies? Do i need to get an ARV?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! If Austin hasn't been bitten by unvaccinated or wild animals then you are likely fine. I would highly recommend contacting your countries health department and a human doctor to be sure. If Austin had rabies in the transmissible form he would show signs in 10 days and then you would immediately need treatment. Be sure to get him rabies vaccinated as soon as he is old enough. If he is normal in 10 days then he couldn't have given you rabies. I wish you and Austin the best!
