My dog is losing hair on his legs and shoulders. What can I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 75 lbs

My dog is loosing hair at an alarming rate around his legs and spreading toward his shoulders, I need to comfort him until he can get to the vet. He doesn't have fleas, I think it's his shampoo?

This can be a sign of a staph infection on the skin and in the hair follicle. This is often due to an allergy which can be from food, fleas or something in the environment. It is best to give him a bath to help control the bacteria in dawn dish soap and baby shampoo. You can apply neosporin or cortisone cream to the bad areas to help. From there you will need to see a vet to see what antibiotic is best to treat it.
