Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Usually ear mites are found in puppies and kittens. In adult animals scratching and shaking the ears is usually from an ear infection from a yeast and or bacterial infection. This is diagnosed by your Vet looking at a smear of the wax under the microscope. Ear infections are treated by cleaning the ears and medicated ear drops. Even animals that do have ears mites sometimes also have secondary infections. Long story short you can treat Pepper for ear mites with out hurting her. But if it doesn't help she should be examined by your vet. Have a great day!
