My old dog is constipated. Will beef liver help soften her stool?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | spayed

My dog is 16 and has trouble pooing everyday and suffers consipation as she is old, is beef liver ok to give to her or would it make her consipatied or would it help soften her stool?

Poor Kimmy. Pets can have constipation for many reasons and I recommend to try a different diet. Often times the right combination of fiber can help pets have more regular bowel movements. The diet I recommend is Royal Canin. Most pets on this diet have good stool quality. I don't think beef liver will help but canned pumpkin and a diet change might. Here is a link about constipation: Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.co/article/constipation-in-dogs-101-what-you-need-to-know/ I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.

I would actually give her something higher in fiber like canned pureed pumpkin. This will help to regulate her stools. I would also talk to your vet about whether she could be having some arthritis in her back, hips or knees that could be making it more difficult for her to poop. They may recommend meds for pain and arthritis or even a stool softener. I hope this helps.
