My dog's paw pads are torn after the park. Bandage or vet visit?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labradoodle | Male | neutered | 1 year and 10 months old | 60 lbs

I was doing the usual tick check on my pup’s paws and saw that on his two front paws it looks like the skin is ripped up?? I’ve never seen this before. We just got back from being at the dog park for a few hours. He hasn’t licked at them yet or whines in pain at all. His hind paws don’t show anything. I kept feeling the ashfault and sidewalks and they weren’t “hot” like I could keep my backhand on them Do I bandage Them? Polysporn them? Do I just let him lick/ chew until the skin is off?

Hello. Somehow Rumple tore his pads, probably on some rough ground doing some quick, hard turns. Yes, you should bandage the paw up to protect the delicate tissue underneath. Be very careful not to bandage too tight. Then make sure when he goes out the bandages do not get wet. Have your vet look at the pads tomorrow to first see if they need further treatment such as suturing. Then, a proper bandage will be applied to protect the pads further. They should heal in a couple of weeks. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
