My overweight long-haired cat can't groom. How to remove severe mats?

I have a long haired elderly maincoon/tabby mix with mats all over his body because he is too overweight to reach them and honestly doesnt even try. Is there some product we can use to help him out? Shedding brushes are useless at this point and we've nearly resorted to a professional groomer. Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 10 years and 2 months old | 18 lbs
