My overweight long-haired cat can't groom. How to remove severe mats?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 10 years and 2 months old | 18 lbs

I have a long haired elderly maincoon/tabby mix with mats all over his body because he is too overweight to reach them and honestly doesnt even try. Is there some product we can use to help him out? Shedding brushes are useless at this point and we've nearly resorted to a professional groomer.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Merrill. You will likely need to start by having him groomed. He will need all of the mats shaved off. Then you could try brushing him with a Furminator brush for maintenance. I hope this information helps!
