My double-coated dog was shaved. How to help coat grow back normally?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Australian Shepherd - miniature | Male | neutered | 2 years and 10 months old | 17.63 lbs

I sent my double coated dog to get groomed and the groomer shaved off his first coat. How do I make sure my dog is comfortable and his first layer grows back normally? I’m concerned since I’ve read double coated dogs should not be shaved. I’ve attached pictures of my dog before and after the grooming.

Unfortunately there is not much you can do to ensure a full coat griws back but I would recommend a well balanced diet (preferably a skin support diet) and an omega fatty acid supplement to promote a skin and coat regeneration. Regular brushing at home can boost circulation to the skin and may also help but time will tell - some dogs recover a full coat at the first attempt but some may take years to grow out

While shaving down can temporarily thin the coat out, it should eventually grow back even on a double coated breed, though it may appear thin or patchy in places until it fills back in. It's very common for long haired breeds to get trims or shaves in spots when having surgical procedures or IVs placed in a veterinary setting, and the fur does grow back over time, it just may take a few months to be as plush and full as it was before (think back to when Nicky was a puppy and had a thinner type of coat). Supporting good coat health with a balanced diet or adding in supplements such as Vitamin E or fish oils can help ensure the coat stays healthy and shiny.

My Chow is double coated and I've shaved her fur off many times, and it's always grown back. Unfortunately there is nothing you can do to help your dog, the coat should grow back in a couple of months.

The coat will grow back in the coming weeks to months. Unfortunately, it may not have the same appearance. Feed a healthy, balanced diet and consider an essential fatty acid supplement, such as DermCaps or EicosaCaps, to promote healthy skin and coat. Be sure to use a shirt or other protection if Jack spends a lot of time outdoors. This is to prevent sunburn.
