Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Male | neutered | 4 years and 2 months old | 16 lbs
My poor dog licks his tongue in and out repeatedly while making a sound similar to "smacking." It was quite endearing when he was a puppy because he reminded me of my father (who had the same bad habit). Is there a reason for this behavior? Is there a supplement that I should be giving him to stop him from doing it? Or should I just continue to ignore it? He also licks himself, me, his toys, the bedding and everything else that is around him after his tongue finally stops moving.

Some dogs do seem to lick more than others and the cause is not known at this time. Certainly breeds like Shih Tzus can get hair stuck in the mouth and lips which can cause licking. You may try keeping the facial hair very short. You may also try feeding a diet such as Royal Canin as it is fortified with supplements to keep the surfaces of the skin healthy (both in the mouth and elsewhere). You may also encourage him to drink water or add water to the food to make sure his oral cavity remains moist. It’s likybthe veterinarian has checked his mouth for any abnormalities but you may have this done as well. Otherwise ignore the behavior. Best of luck and please feel free to post any additional questions.
