Why are same-day cat vaccines required for vet procedures?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

I had to take my cat in for a full mouth extraction today. The receptionist told me I had to have vaccinations prior to the procedure or they wouldn't perform it. She said in the event my cat bit or scratched someone the vaccines needed to be administered for the safety of the staff. Vaccines take 2-7 days before they are effective so how does that make sense?

If she told you that and the vaccination was done on the same day as the procedure then you are correct, it makes no sense whatsoever. this is a common policy in vet clinics, as long as the cat is vaccinated some of them won't really go through the correct protocol of doing the vaccination at least a week before the procedure.
