my dog is coughing, how can I help him? he is coughing like there’s mucus in his throat and he often gags. He only coughes when there is a movement like getting all excited when i come home or getting on the car to get to the vet and all of a sudden he would be exhausted and breathing so heavily and coughing. The vet said the tiredness and exhaustion would go away if i keep him in the air conditioned room, Is that really necessary? how can i help him? and also can i bathe him?

Hello. It is very difficult to tell you how to help Cointhee without knowing fully what is causing his cough. It could be from heart trouble ( congestive heart failure, heartworm disease ), primary lung disease ( pneumonia ) or from tracheal disease ( tracheal collapse ). Keeping a dog cool & stress free is always good advice, but getting to the root cause of the cough is the only way to try & treat or at least manage the problem. If he is not sick there is no reason you cannot bathe him, just dry him as quickly as possible. There are some over the counter remedies for a cough in a dog, but without knowing why he coughs, using the wrong medication may be harmful. So until your veterinarian can be more specific in his diagnosis, then I suspect keeping your pet in air conditioning is very good advice.
