Brands like Royal Canin, Purina Pro Plan and Science Diet that other brands do not have is high quality ingredients that are more expensive and most importantly extensive research on their diets to really know for sure they are actually good. Also, their diets tend to go through a quality control process to make sure the product is safe to use. All those things make the product better but also increase the price.
