Why does my dog's chin and ears smell like mildew and his skin itch?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 7 months and 20 days old | 115 lbs

My dog just got a bath 25 minutes ago. He smelled just like mildew on the tips of ears, neck and definitely his chin/beard. He will scratch only occasionally or a lot it depends. But he only got this around 5-6 months old randomly and now it’s hard to make it stop cause i can’t just not let him drink. Apple Cider Vinegar kinda cured the smell and i did it just Incase it was yeast. But I’m still puzzled how to get the smell out or what causes it. Should i get a dripless bowl

This is probably due to an allergy, although it could also be infection or mites. First of all, in order to rule out skin parasites, you will need to treat with a high quality flea treatment, then ask the vet to perform a skin scrape - this might reveal an infection or a mite infestation. If all of those came back negative, the next step is to treat the allergy symptomatically and try to discover the cause of the allergy. Three main type of allergies are usually affecting pets: food allergies, flea and parasite related ones and environmental type (allergens coming from trees, pollens, dust etc etc). Some medications can be given by the vet in order to repair any possible skin lesions (like steroids and antibiotics). Specific antibiotic-shampoos can be prescribed as well.
