My chihuahua is still scratching despite Benadryl. What can I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | 12 years and 5 months old

My 12 year old chihuahua has got spots above her tail. She is being treated for one that's healing on her left shoulder. My Vet told Me to give her low dose benadryl? It helps but shes still incessantly scratching. I've tried oatmeal baths. Coconut oil and even a small bit of witch hazel? What else can I do? Desperate Dog Mum..

I am sorry to hear about your pup! Make sure she is on an effecitve flea preventative as this is a location that is prime for flea bites. I would definitely let your vet know she is still itchy. Sometimes a different antihistamine such as zyrtec can be helpful, but often these dogs needs a few days of a stronger medication like a steroid or Apoquel to break that itch/inflammation cycle. You can read more about itching at https://veterinarypartner.vin.com/default.aspx?pid=19239&id=4951477 . Other over the counter options include fatty acid supplements like Welactin, and topical products like Duoxo Calm shampoo or mousse.
