Dog gum lump: Is it a tumor or abscess? Can I safely soothe it?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Golden Retriever | Male | neutered | 34 lbs

Hi, my dog has either a tumor or a tooth abscess on his lower gums, but I don't know what it is. I am taking him to a veterinarian, but in the meantime, can you tell me what this could be? Would warm water & Epsom salt help soothe it before his appointment?

I am afraid this looks like a tumor, or severe overgrowth of gingiva. This could also be just a hyperplasia of bone. Your vet may want to take an xray to check whether there is bone involvement. Your vet may also want to do a biopsy to determine whether this is malignant or not. There is nothing you can do at home until your vet has diagnosed the condition.
