My kitten itches after flea treatment, but I see no fleas. Why?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | British Shorthair | Male | neutered | 3.5 lbs

My kitten had fleas recently. I treated him with advantage spot on treatment and then cleaned/sprayed the whole house 5 days ago. I found a couple more live fleas on him yesterday and gave him some oral medication today that was recommended by my vet. He is now itching a lot, but I haven't seen any more fleas. Is it possible there are more fleas hiding? Or is this just a side effect/healing process?

Often cats and kittens are allergic to the flea bites and they can continue to itch for a while once all the fleas are gone. Sometimes you’ll see fleas that are still moving but are probably dying. I use a flea comb daily to check for and remove any fleas. That will let you know if they are all gone or not. Once the bites are healed the itching should stop.
