Dog scratching face, now has scabs and losing fur. What's happening?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Yorkshire Terrier | Male | neutered | 8 years and 7 months old | 5 lbs

My yorkie, Munchie, started out with scabs on his face from scratching himself because he was stuck under a blanket and became frantic. He does not have ringworm, fleas, ticks or allergies. He now is losing fur where the scabs were. Is there anything I can do for him to protect his fur? What could it be??He doesn't act like he is in pain, I can touch his face, I cut around the scabs, but he is losing chunks of fur.

I’m not sure how you ruled out allergies - I would be most suspicious of allergies particularly if this started with Munchie rubbing his face. There is nothing specific to do to prevent hair loss from skin disease, other than to treat the underlying problem. I would recommend seeing your veterinarian- if they have already seen Munchie for this problem they may recommend other tests or treatment if his lesions are getting worse.
