Why is my Yorkie's poop soft with mucus, but she's still playful?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Yorkshire Terrier | Female | spayed | 10 months and 8 days old | 5.95 lbs

My yorkie was always a picky eater but more so this week and since yesterday she still poops twice a day but all over her pet pad and it's soft and with mucus. Otherwise she's playful as usual. Any advice? Our vet is currently out of town. Thank you!

Softer stool and mucus could indicate something underlying or some GI upset. You can try to add in a little boiled chicken and rice to Bailey's diet to help settle minor stomach upset. If the problem persists, bringing in a sample of her stool to your vet when he returns to check for parasites and other common issues is best. If you see any major changes such as vomiting, diarrhea, bloody or discolored stool or vomit, abdominal pain, etc, then seeking veterinary care sooner with another vet or ER doc is best.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Bailey! I think she may have an upset belly and that is why she is eating less. Diarrhea with mucous can indicate that. Causes of diarrhea are: intestinal parasites, viral or bacterial infections, dietary indiscretion. pancreatitis, inflammatory bowel disease or a food allergy. I would start her on a bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger with rice. Feed 1 cup per 20 lbs per day until 2 normal stools. You can also start a probiotic, like Purina Fortiflora or Nutramax Proviable. I wish you the best!
