My dog is itchy with sores. What can I buy to help until the vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Bulldog | Male | unneutered | 5 years and 8 months old

My dog is an American bulldog/mastiff 160 pounds. He has been really itchy for a week straight. He scratches so much he has sores I don't know what to do to help him. Is there something I can buy to help soothe his pain. I can't take him to the doctor until next week I hate to see him suffer. Please help!

Hi, thanks for using PetCoach! Poor Meco! I would check him closely for fleas as the hind end is a common spot for fleas. I like the Seresto collar, Nexgard, Advantix, Simparica and Bravecto for fleas. You can bath him in a medicated shampoo (see link) and try an antihistamine to help the scratching until your Vet appointment. If you find fleas treat them will help immensely. Good luck! https://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=36967 https://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=27957 https://www.petcoach.co/canigive/dog/zyrtec/
