My dog has itchy seasonal allergies. What antihistamines can I give?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Male | neutered | 1 year and 3 months old | 12 lbs

Barkley has seasonal allergies that make him itchy. He’s already been seen by his Vet who recommended antihistamines. What are the different kinds of antihistamines I can give him and/or what’s the best type for itchy skin as this is really his only symptom?

Unfortunately, we cannot (legally and ethically) advise medication without having an established patient-doctor relationship. It is also dangerous for us to advise medication without examining Barkley and fully understanding his condition and medical history. Your vet should be happy to answer this question and can likely give you a couple different options for antihistamines that are sold over the counter. If the antihistamines are not effective, then he may need a stronger medication. Below is a link to a couple of good articles that have information about allergies and ways to provide treatment at home. https://www.petcoach.co/article/how-to-tell-if-your-pet-has-allergies/ https://www.petcoach.co/article/4-great-strategies-for-relieving-your-dog-s-allergies/ I hope that helps and Barkley gets better soon.
