My indoor cat has black specks. Does he have fleas without symptoms?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 3 years and 11 months old | 14 lbs

Is it possible to have fleas without any other symptoms? All my cats are strictly indoors. I found black specs on my cats Benji's fur last night. Other than him sticking his head outside when the balcony door is open he doesn't have any contact with the outdoors. No other animals come inside the house. I haven't found any black specs on the other cats. Other than the specs Benji doesn't have any flea symptoms. I did the tissue test and the specs bleed when water was added

Hi there. Yes, it's definitely possible to have fleas without any other obvious skin problems - even in indoor cats. If you're seeing black specks in Benji's fur, I would recommend starting him and your other cats on a good quality flea medication like Revolution or Advantage Multi, to get rid of any fleas they may currently have and prevent them from getting more. It's best to do this right away as soon as you notice a problem, to avoid getting fleas established in your house as this will make them much more difficult to get rid of.
