My dog suddenly pees indoors when visitors arrive. What's happening?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Old English Sheepdog | Female | spayed | 3 years and 2 months old | 70 lbs

I adopted a 2 yo OESheepdog 1 year ago.In the last 2 weeks she has started voiding when someone comes to visit. She has never gone in the house and is healthy, why would she start this now? She only voids a small amount and l let her out immediately, but this is troubling.

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I would recommend having her examined by a veterinarian and having her urine tested to check for a urinary tract infection. If an animal that has always been normal suddenly begins to have abnormal urinary behavior, it is best to rule out an infection of the urinary tract as the cause first. If testing comes back normal, this could be behavioral. You can start by having her meet the person outside of the house so that she voids outside rather than inside and you can then reward her for voiding outside. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. Please let me know if you have any further questions or concerns and I would be more than happy to help you further.
