Cat scratching scabs and losing fur? Affordable solutions needed.

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 2 years and 1 month old | 6.5 lbs

My cat is covered in scabs from scratching and sge is losing her fur from incessant grooming. I can't get her to stop and I can't afford a vet right now. What do I do?

Poor Lucky. Skin issues like this are most often caused by allergies, but she could also have fleas, a bacterial or fungal skin infection, or skin mites (mange). Since it sounds quite severe, I'm afraid you'll almost certainly need prescription medication from your vet in order to treat it effectively, so I would try to get her in for an exam as soon as you can. If cost is a concern, you can see if there is a low-cost SPCA clinic in your area that could help, or apply online for Care Credit: www.carecredit.com In the meantime, you may need to put an e-collar (plastic cone) on her to prevent her from continuing to lick and bite herself, as this will only make the problem worse. If she isn't already on a good quality flea medication, you can also do this in case she has fleas - Advantage is the best over-the-counter option.
