My dog chews door frames when alone. How to stop separation anxiety?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 2 years and 5 months old | 20 lbs

I left my dog alone for a couple of hours in my new home just to see how she'll do alone, and she chewed at the wooden border to my front door...How can I prevent this from happening again?

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. It sounds like Mia is dealing with separation anxiety. This can be difficult to address but can be corrected with patience and training. Some products I would recommend trying may help with this anxiety. If these do not work, you should speak with your veterinarian about anti-anxiety medications, as these may be more effective than supplements. I would also recommend contacting a trainer and speaking with a trainer about correcting this behavior. Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns and I would be more than happy to help you further. 1. Adaptil products (collar and plugin) 2. Thundershirt 3. NaturVet Quiet Moments Calm chews 4. Pet Cube interactive camera ***all of the above products can be found online quite easily***
