My dog snorts sometimes. Is it a reverse sneeze and what should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | unneutered | 1 year old | 8 lbs

My dog has a snorting sound every once in a great while, for about 3-4 seconds, and the longest is for about 15 to 20 seconds. But it's rare. Its like he breathes in very hard. When I hear him do it, I hold him and comfort him and he stops. What could this be and what do I need to do? I appreciate your time. Thank you! Celynda

Hi Celynda, It sounds like you are describing a reverse sneeze. Try watching a video on YouTube. We don't have a good answer as to why this occurs in some cases. Typically, I see it in patients that have allergies and airway disease. In some cases, it can be seen with inhalation of a foreign object. If the symptoms persist or worsen follow up with your veterinarian.
