My cat won't stop throwing up after neutering. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My 2 cats were neutered today and they have thrown up about 10-15 each since we got home 9 hours ago. I called the vet about 4 hours after we got home and they said the nausea was probably a combination of the anesthesia and the 1 hour car ride home. They gave us pain meds to give them, but I'm worried that they wont be able to keep them down since it will be the first thing other than water in their stomachs in about 24 hours.

Oh poor cats! I too would worry about giving them pain meds by mouth for fear that they will just vomit it back up. They may both be having a bad reaction to the anesthesia, but that is an excessive amount of vomiting even with that considered. Because of the excessive vomiting and fear for dehydration and worsening of their condition, I would recommend considering taking them both to an ER vet for a shot of anti-vomit medication, subcutaneous fluids (if they are already dehydrated, which they probably are), and a good exam to ensure your fur babies will be ok. I just fear that without immediate action, this adverse reaction will continue and end up making them much much worse. I hope they feel better soon! Once they are better, have a talk with the vet who did their surgery and investigate what they could have possibly reacted to and make a note on their chart to avoid it in the future.
