It is extremely difficult, if not impossible to control a pets allergies with access to medications through your vet. If you are looking for an affordable and effective treatment, then ask your vet about a product called Apoquel. It has grown immensely in its popularity among pet owners because of its reasonable pricing and effectiveness in controlling canine allergic dermatitis. Also I know you probably are already aware, but finding out what the allergen is and either avoiding it (when possible) or getting skin allergy testing and subsequent allergy shots are often needed to truly control a pets allergic condition. However as I mentioned earlier, Apoquel acts to stop the itch in pets with allergies as long as the pet is on the medication. Another thing you can do is to give Ahi daily fish oils (pet formulated from your local pet store), which provides some natural anti-inflammatory properties. Here is a website link on canine allergic dermatitis for more information: http://www.veterinarypartner.com/Content.plx?P=A&S=0&C=0&A=1535
