My neutered cat keeps humping his toys. Is this normal? What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 1 year and 7 months old

I had Milo neutered when he was about five months. He's a year and 7 months now and today I found him humping against his teddy under my bed. Why is he doing this? What should I do?

Many neutered cats will still show humping or mounting behavior with stuffed toys, beds, or other objects - it seems to be a self-soothing behavior in some cases, and probably feels good to them. As long as it isn't excessive (meaning that he does it constantly, to the point of causing soreness or irritation to his penis or the surrounding area), it isn't really a problem. If you're concerned, you can put away the toys that he tends to hump to help prevent him from doing this.
