Why is my cat still itchy with hair loss, dander, and foul smell?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | RagaMuffin | Female | spayed | 8 years old | 5 lbs

I've taken my cat to the vet, spent a lot of money, did tests, no answers. She is a 5 lb calico, heavy dander, itchy, hair loss, red inflamed at one time. Was on steroids, helped a bit. Shampooing her once a week as recommended by vet. Foul smelling, help?

I'm sorry to hear that Cally is having skin problems! It would be helpful to know exactly what tests have been done and what treatments she has been on in order to give you any specific advice about what else might be helpful - feel free to post another question with more details, and we would be happy to try and help. In general, I can tell you that skin conditions can sometimes be quite frustrating to diagnose and treat. Possible causes for excessive itching and dandruff with hair loss and redness in cats would include allergies (food allergies, or an allergy to something in the environment), fleas, a bacterial or fungal skin infection, or skin mites (mange). Tests that may be helpful in making a diagnosis would include a skin scrape, bacterial or fungal skin culture, a diet trial with a prescription hypoallergenic food, and/or serum or intradermal allergy testing. I would suggest talking with your vet about the next recommended step for Cally at this point, or you could request referral to a veterinary dermatologist for a second opinion if you prefer.
